As the surface cooled and solidified, lava continued to flow beneath, carving a network of tubes that stretched more than six kilometres from the crater to the coast. Cueva de los Verdes occupies the upper section of this geological structure, a passage that remained hidden until local farmers rediscovered it in the seventeenth century and used it as refuge from pirate raids.
The cave system takes its name from the Verde family, who owned the land above, not from the Spanish word for green. Opening to the public in 1964, it became one of the first volcanic tunnels in the world accessible to visitors through guided interpretation. Artist Jesús Soto designed the lighting installation that now illuminates the route, a minimalist approach that uses low-intensity spots to reveal the textures of ropy pahoehoe lava, collapsed ceilings, and natural arches without overwhelming the underground darkness. His intervention respects the cave's acoustic properties — sound reverberates differently in chambers where ceilings rise twelve metres above the basalt floor.
Lanzarote cave tours through Cueva de los Verdes follow a one-kilometre circular route, descending to fifty metres below ground level. The guided format is mandatory, designed to manage the fragile microclimate and prevent erosion of the lava formations. Groups follow a concrete path installed to protect the original floor, passing through galleries named for their visual characteristics: the Hall of Columns, the Throne Room, the passage known as the Narrow. Temperature holds constant at nineteen degrees Celsius year-round, a stark contrast to the arid surface landscape of malpais scrubland and scattered vineyards.
The most recognised feature is an optical illusion engineered within the cave's natural architecture, a feature that guides reveal at the tour's conclusion. This element distinguishes Cueva de los Verdes from other volcanic tunnel systems across the Canary Islands, including the nearby Jameos del Agua, which shares the same subterranean geology but offers a contrasting visitor experience through César Manrique's architectural interventions. Together, these sites form part of the Corona Volcanic Tunnel, a protected geological monument that demonstrates the island's formation through successive eruptions over the past twenty million years.
